All Jazzed Up

Mason Drumm never listened to jazz before joining Verdigris High School's jazz band.

"Before being in jazz band, all I listened to was rock. Now all I listen to is jazz," said Drumm, a senior who plays drums.

Jazz bands from Verdigris and Edison Preparatory School will perform Sunday at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame Jazz Depot.

Both high school bands took home awards and honors last school year. Edison was the Class 4A state champions, and Verdigris placed first in Class 2A state competition.

Chuck Cissel, CEO of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, said he is thrilled to have both award-winning bands perform.

"Both of these groups are outstanding," Cissel said. "We have to support these kids. We encourage people to bring their families so the younger kids can see the older kids."

Cissel said proceeds from the concert go toward scholarships for high school jazz students. read more
