Beginners Guitar
It’s always seemed a shame to me that the majority of people who decide to learn a musical instrument give up after just a few months. It’s certainly not easy learning the guitar, especially to begin with, but that doesn’t mean you should quit. There are many issues and problems beginners may have to confront when they learn to play the guitar, and I will address some of the more common ones here.
One of the best ways for beginners to learn the guitar is by using Jamorama – take a look at Jamorama
The first thing you’ll need to learn is how to hold a guitar correctly. The guitar can be played whilst standing by supporting it with a strap. The guitar should be supported at a height that feels natural and doesn’t put to much strain or stress on your back or arms when playing. Your fretting arm should be bent at a right angle when holding the neck of the guitar. Hold the guitar so that the neck points upwards a little bit. If you are sitting, you can either rest the guitar on your right knee and keep the neck parallel to the floor, or rest it on your left knee and point the neck slightly upwards. The main thing is to find the way that feels the most comfortable for you.
To play the guitar you can either use your fingers, or you can use a plectrum. When using a pick you want to rest your hand slightly in front of the guitars bridge. If you’re using your fingers then let your hand float just above the strings. Your fretting hand should place each of it’s four fingers over one fret on the neck. Your thumb should remain on the back of the neck, halfway down and opposite your second finger.
One of the first things you’ll need to do is to learn the names of the strings. From lowest to highest (thickest to thinnest) they are EDGBE. Now you are ready to learn to play chords. You will want to learn as many chords as you can, as being able to strum chords will mean you’ll be able to play a lot of different songs in a very short space of time. Chords can be learnt by reading chord diagrams. These are simply a grid with horizontal lines representing the strings of the guitar, and vertical lines representing the frets. Dots on the lines show you which notes to play. They are very easy to understand, and will enable you to learn many new chords quickly.
Another thing I need to highlight is the importance of tuning up properly. If you are not correctly tuned up, anything you play will sound bad, no matter how good a player you are. There are various ways of tuning a guitar, but the easiest, and quickest, is by using an electronic guitar tuner. All you have to do is plug your guitar in and play each string. The tuner will tell you if you are out of tune.
Finally I’ll mention a few of the most common problems facing beginners when they are learning the guitar. For one thing, your fingers will find it difficult, and maybe even painful, to make some of the shapes and stretches you’ll be asking them to at first. The best thing to do here is just to have a rest from playing, until your hands feel normal again. Over time this pain should disappear as your hands get used to the stretches. Another thing often experience is pain in the finger tips caused by pressing down on the strings. Eventually you will develop calluses on your finger tips and this will no longer be an issue.
That concludes this guitar for beginners article. That should have cleared up a few things you might have been wondering about and, hopefully, inspired you to start playing.
