How To Determine If Custom Leather Guitar Straps Are Your Best Choice
If I'm being honest with you, it really surprises me when people spend a lot of money on a great guitar then they choose the cheesiest looking strap they see hanging on the wall. If I had an expensive sports car I wouldn't put cheap tires on it, how about you? It's no different with a guitar and a strap to me.
Custom leather guitar straps are what I like to use, same thing as making sure your hot rod has good rubber on the road!
Now, we are talking about custom made here, and the options are many. What kind of music you perform and your typical audience will have an influence in the type and design of the strap you use, because you want to look cool for your audience, right?!
An example would be if you are a heavy metal or hair band type player, some wide leather with studs or maybe a skull and crossbones design would be cool. But if you’re an acoustic guitar player, like a singer-songwriter type, maybe you'll want to keep it toned down a little in order to keep the audiences eye on you when you're playing. Although you wouldn't want to be too bland either, you've got to have some style.
Naturally, it's completely up to you how you hang your guitar from your neck, but just remember, the reality is, that image is a huge part of success in the entertainment industry, and by looking the part you're portraying you've already jumped one hurdle! Then you can wow them with your awesome skills!
A small piece of advice also…and this has nothing to do with your strap, but make sure your heart is in it whatever style of music you’re performing. If your not, people will be able to tell and you will be miserable.
It makes no difference what kind of music you perform, the price is going to affect what you ultimately decide. Have a top dollar amount that your budget can absorb and don't exceed it. Don’t get a bunch of bling that you can’t afford just to look cool. Save your pennies and wait to get that strap that will be just right. Then you won’t end up regretting spending more than you could afford.
There are other options, such as sublimated straps, better known as screen printed, and it can be done on vinyl and some kinds of plastic, the possibilities are extensive and are only capped by what you can dream up, and the results can be a personalized strap like no other. In my opinion though, better comfort can be had with leather straps that are custom made, and for me, comfort is important because it has an impact on performance.
But this isn’t about my choice, it’s about yours. I like leather, but if you prefer something else then you should go with it so you’re happy with your decision. Happy strap shopping!
