She added that her son received an electric guitar for Christmas and plays in his own band.
The boy’s interest in music has increased since then.
Playing instruments could be the key component to teaching children, said Austin, who has a master’s degree in early childhood education.
"I find children have so many things that engage them," she said. "I don’t want children to be sitting still for more than 30 seconds. Children are learning the most when they’re moving and singing."
She encourages the students to sing and dance to music, as well as create stories using puppets they make themselves.
Austin also gave three presentations to the Head Start teachers this week.
Jones-Purdy expects the artists’ visit will inspire the teachers. read more
